Kian Asanad, MD — An Honest Editorial Review

Most patient research around fertility clinics in California focuses on reproductive endocrinologists and IVF labs, but roughly half of infertility cases involve a male factor — and many of those require a different kind of specialist. Dr. Kian Asanad is a fellowship-trained reproductive urologist and microsurgeon who directs the USC Fertility and Men's Sexual Health Center at 9033 Wilshire Blvd in Beverly Hills. He is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Urology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and sees patients whose evaluation or treatment falls outside the scope of a standard REI practice.

About the Physician

Dr. Asanad earned his MD from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA with Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism Honor Society distinction. He completed his urology residency at Keck Medicine of USC and Los Angeles General Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in andrology, male infertility, and reproductive microsurgery at Northwestern University. He is a member of the American Urological Association (AUA), the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), the Society for the Study of Male Reproduction, and the Sexual Medicine Society of North America. You can review his peer-reviewed work (40+ publications and book chapters) via his PubMed publications, and verify urology certification through the ABMS Certification Matters lookup.

Practice Focus — Male Fertility Microsurgery

This is a reproductive urology practice, not an REI or IVF clinic. Dr. Asanad's primary focus is the surgical and medical evaluation of men with infertility or reproductive concerns.

Services Offered

  • Comprehensive male infertility work-up (semen analysis interpretation, hormonal panels, genetic testing)
  • Microsurgical varicocelectomy
  • Microsurgical vasectomy reversal (vasovasostomy / vasoepididymostomy)
  • Testicular sperm extraction (TESE) and microsurgical TESE (micro-TESE) for non-obstructive azoospermia
  • Surgical sperm retrieval coordinated with a partner's IVF/ICSI cycle
  • Hypogonadism and testosterone evaluation (fertility-preserving therapy)
  • Oncofertility consultation and sperm banking for male cancer patients
  • No-scalpel vasectomy and post-vasectomy fertility planning
  • Management of Peyronie's disease, erectile dysfunction, and chronic testicular pain

What This Practice Is NOT

Dr. Asanad's office is not a SART-member IVF center and does not operate an on-site embryology lab. If a female partner needs IVF with ICSI — the standard pairing for severe male-factor infertility — that cycle is run by a reproductive endocrinologist at a separate clinic. For micro-TESE with same-day ICSI, the sperm retrieval is often scheduled to coincide with the partner's egg retrieval at the REI clinic, with the embryology lab receiving tissue directly. Los Angeles REI practices that routinely coordinate with male-fertility microsurgeons include HRC Fertility, Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles, Kindbody LA, Reproductive Partners, and USC Fertility. Your urologist and your REI will communicate directly about timing.

California Insurance Context

California's SB 729 expands large-group commercial fertility coverage, including IVF, as it phases in — but coverage for male-fertility surgery (varicocelectomy, vasectomy reversal, micro-TESE) is inconsistent. Urologic surgery is sometimes billed under general urology benefits rather than a fertility rider, and vasectomy reversal in particular is often excluded. Self-funded (ERISA) employer plans remain exempt from state mandates. See our fertility insurance mandates by state guide, and ask the office to verify benefits with CPT codes before scheduling.

Patient Experience

Dr. Asanad's 4.8/165 aggregate rating is a solid sample size for a subspecialty practice. Recurring themes in public reviews mention thorough pre-op counseling, clear explanations of surgical options versus medical management, and responsiveness during the recovery window. The Wilshire Boulevard office has building garage parking; plan 45–60 minutes for a first consult.

When to Consult a Reproductive Urologist

  • Abnormal semen analysis (low count, low motility, low morphology, or azoospermia)
  • Varicocele with pain, testicular atrophy, or infertility
  • Desire to reverse a prior vasectomy
  • Male cancer patient needing pre-treatment fertility preservation
  • Genetic concerns (Y-chromosome microdeletion, Klinefelter syndrome, CFTR mutations)
  • Couples with unexplained infertility where male evaluation has not been completed

Considering At-Home Insemination?

At-home insemination is generally appropriate only for patients with no known male-factor infertility — for example, single parents by choice or same-sex female couples using a cryobanked donor. If Dr. Asanad has identified a male-factor diagnosis or you have already been referred for surgical sperm retrieval, home insemination is not a substitute for the coordinated IVF/ICSI pathway your REI will recommend. For patients without a male-factor diagnosis, at-home insemination kits from MakeAMom offer a lower-cost, private starting point with partner or donor sperm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a reproductive urologist and a reproductive endocrinologist (REI)? A reproductive urologist is a surgeon who evaluates and treats male reproductive problems, including sperm retrieval surgery. A reproductive endocrinologist is an OB-GYN subspecialist who manages the female partner's cycle and runs IVF. Most male-factor couples see both — the urologist for the man, the REI for the IVF cycle. Learn more in our IVF overview.

Does Dr. Asanad perform IVF? No. IVF and embryology are handled by an REI clinic. Dr. Asanad performs surgical sperm retrieval (TESE, micro-TESE, PESA) that can be timed with the partner's egg retrieval.

Is vasectomy reversal covered by insurance? Vasectomy reversal is frequently excluded from commercial insurance, even under state fertility mandates. Confirm with the office and your carrier before scheduling. ASRM has patient-facing guidance on male-factor infertility treatment options.
