Beta hCG
A blood test measuring the pregnancy hormone hCG to confirm and monitor early pregnancy.
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is produced by the developing placenta shortly after implantation. A beta hCG blood test (quantitative hCG) can detect pregnancy earlier than a urine test and gives an exact number in mIU/mL. In a healthy early pregnancy, levels typically double every 48–72 hours.
After IVF or IUI, a beta hCG is drawn around 10–14 days post-transfer or insemination. A single low or non-rising level may indicate a chemical pregnancy or ectopic pregnancy. Serial draws help distinguish a viable intrauterine pregnancy from these complications.
