IUI (Intrauterine Insemination)

A procedure that places washed, concentrated sperm directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation.

IUI involves washing a sperm sample to remove seminal fluid (which can cause uterine cramping if injected), concentrating motile sperm, and injecting them through a soft catheter into the uterine cavity. Timing is coordinated with natural or medicated ovulation using an LH predictor kit or trigger shot.

IUI is used for mild male factor infertility, cervical mucus problems, unexplained infertility, and same-sex couples or single women using donor sperm. Success rates per cycle are roughly 10–20% and depend heavily on the woman's age and the indication. Most clinics recommend trying 3–6 IUI cycles before moving to IVF if no pregnancy is achieved.
