Surrogacy (Gestational)

An arrangement where a gestational carrier carries a pregnancy created from another person's embryo.

In gestational surrogacy, the carrier (gestational surrogate) has no genetic connection to the baby. The embryo is created via IVF using the intended parent's or donor's eggs and sperm, then transferred to the surrogate's uterus. The surrogate takes hormonal medications to prepare her uterus for transfer.

It differs from traditional surrogacy (rarely used today) in which the surrogate's own eggs are used. Gestational surrogacy is legally recognized in many U.S. states, though laws vary significantly.

Common reasons include uterine absence (after hysterectomy), a medical condition making pregnancy dangerous, recurrent implantation failure, and same-sex male couples or single men building a family.
